18 August 2019 Social Media Post: On Ibuprofen

Although available over the counter, Ibuprofen can significantly increase your risk of a gastrointestinal bleed, particularly at high dose. This interesting article by Dr. Sergey Motov (@painfreeED) published in #annalsofemergencymedicine shows that doses of 600mg and 800mg did not provide better pain control than 400mg. Patients presented to the Emergency Department with musculoskeletal or cutaneous pain which they rated at 6.4-6.5 out of a 10 point scale. They were treated with either 400mg, 600 mg or 800mg of ibuprofen. Pain scores after treatment were 4.4 in the 400mg group, 4.5 in the 600mg group and 4.5 in the 800mg treatment groups.
